Trimming Quilt Blocks Before Sewing Them

I would love to say that my patchwork quilt blocks are always the right size and evenly shaped, but it wouldn't be true and you wouldn't believe me anyway!

At the very least you will have sticky out bits from the triangles if you haven't trimmed them as you go along.

It really is important to trim the patchwork blocks before you sew them together or you won't stand a chance of finishing with a flat quilt top.

Looking at the back of the quilt block you can see how the corners of the triangles stick out.

Line up one side of your patchwork block with a line on your cutting mat, so that you will be trimming your block square with the lines of the mat.

Using your rotary cutter and ruler, trim all 4 sides in turn.  Make sure that the patchwork block remains in line with the cutting mat lines as you move around all the edges.

Check the length of each side as you trim it to make sure that all your blocks are the same size square.

Now that you have all 4 sides trimmed and even, the block can be sewn to another block to start creating the patchwork quilt.
