FREE QUILT PATTERN - TOY PRAM QUILT AND PILLOW

One of the joys of sewing is being able to make something for your child or grandchild to use with their toys.  A patchwork quilt and pillow for a toy pram is just the sort of thing I mean so I was pleased to be asked recently for a pattern for these.

Cut two strips of fabric 3.1/2" wide.  With right sides together and using a 1/4" seam, sew the two strips together along the length and cut at 3.1/2" intervals.  You should get twelve of these double square strips.  Take three of them and place them as shown on the right.  These will form the toy pram pillow.

Take a further seven of these double squares and lay five of them underneath each other with the pink and white alternating.  Lay two of the double squares in a line down the right hand side, again alternating the pink and white.  For the white square in the bottom right of the photo you will need to unpick one of the double squares and just use the white square.  Sew these strips together to make the toy pram quilt and sew together the three double squares to make the toy pram pillow.

The quilt top measures 15.1/2" by 9.1/2" and the pillow top measures 9.1/2" by 6.1/2", so cut a piece of wadding and of backing fabric in both of these sizes.

Lay down the wadding then the quilt top with right side up and then the quilt backing with right side down.  Do the same for the three layers of the pillow and sew both the quilt and the pillow around three and a half sides.  The half side not sewn is the gap to turn both items right side out.

Trim the corners to reduce bulk and turn the quilt and the pillow right side out.

For the toy pram quilt you can now turn under the edges and slipstitch the gap to close it.  For the toy pram pillow, gently push some kapok or other stuffing through the gap and then slipstitch the gap to close it.

I kept the quilting very simple and just sewed a line of stitching 1/4" either side of every seam.  It's called echo quilting and on a quilt as small as this one I could use my normal sewing foot.

It really didn't take long to make this toy pram patchwork quilt and pillow and it also didn't require much fabric, so you could make several of them in different fabrics for different toys.
