JELLY ROLL BABY QUILT PATTERN USING STRIPPER ROLL

I think that everyone knows that I love jelly roll quilts - they are so much more simple to make with a lot of the cutting already done.  This baby quilt was made using a stripper roll which is more or less the same as a jelly roll but with only twenty fabric strips.  Sometimes a jelly roll can seem overwhelming with up to fifty strips to use up, so these stripper rolls are a great alternative.

The requirements for the jelly roll baby quilt are one stripper roll plus one extra 2.1/2" strip of fabric, one 7.1/4" square cut along both diagonals to make four triangles for the corners, and eight 6.7/8" squares cut along one diagonal to make triangles to go at the end of each row.

Sew the twentyone strips together in three's so that you end up with seven panels of fabric 6.1/2" wide.  Cut across these panels at 6.1/2" intervals to create 6.1/2" squares.  You will need 41 of these squares.

This jelly roll baby quilt is made in rows running diagonally across the quilt.  The first row, which will be the top right corner of the quilt, is simply one corner triangle placed with the long edge at the bottom.

The second row is one red square and one of the larger triangles at each side.  Sew the corner triangle to the square and then the other triangles to each side.

The third row consists of three red squares with a large triangle at each end.  The square under the corner square should have the strips going in the opposite direction to the square above it and to the squares on either side of it.  Sew the squares and triangles together in a row and then sew this row to the corner unit.  Note which way the triangles are placed:  they will form a straight line with the triangle above.

The fourth row is made with five squares and a triangle at each end, the fifth row with seven squares and a triangle at each end.
The sixth row is the half way point.  This will run down the diagonal of the quilt and so has a corner triangle at each end.

The next few rows are similar to the first few rows:  first seven squares and two triangles, then five squares and two triangles, then three squares and two triangles.

The photo shows the seven square row as it will be sewn to the nine square row.  Note that the triangles now face the other way so that they run along the next edge of the quilt top.

The final two rows are the same as the first two but in reverse:  one patch with a triangle on each side and one corner triangle.

This baby quilt is now about 43" square.  If you wanted to make it rectangular you could sew a 1" border strip to opposite edges.
