Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2.3/4" white square. As you can see I was making more than one quilted place mat in the photo.
Sew a seam 1/4" either side of the marked line and cut along the marked line. The two resulting triangles will open up to make 2 squares, each made up of a red triangle and a white triangle.
Sew these together in pairs with the white triangles together as shown. Trim the triangle points.
Add a white 2.1/2" square to each side of the 2 remaining strips and sew one strip each to the top and bottom of the red square. That's the evening star quilt block completed ready to be made into a quilted place mat.
Sew the remaining red and white 2.1/2" squares together in pairs. Add a strip of 4 squares to the top and bottom of the evening star quilt block, then sew a strip of 6 squares to the top and bottom of the quilt block.
Place the backing fabric right side down, lay the wadding on top and then lay the evening star quilt block on top of that. Pin and quilt. I don't know how well it shows in the photo, but I quilted either side of the diagonals, following the lines of the star. Trim the excess wadding and backing fabric and bind as for a normal quilt. For more details of binding click on baby quilt and the binding instructions are towards the end.
