HALLOWEEN QUILT PATTERNS - SPIDER WEB QUILT BLOCK

halloween quilt pattern
Halloween is creeping up on us and I decided to see if there was a way that I could strip piece the spiders web quilt block pattern.  Of course for a Halloween quilt I should probably have used reds and oranges, but I didn't think of that till afterwards. The spiders web quilt block was relatively easy to strip piece and that obviously made it much quicker to make.

I needed a strip of fabric 5.1/2" wide so I cut strips of five different fabrics.  Three of these strips were 1.1/2" wide, one was 2" wide and one was 1" wide.  Sew these strips together with the 2" and 1" strips on the edges and the 1.1/2" strips in the middle.  The reason that I did this was to make the distance between seams irregular so that there would be less time spent matching seams.  You'll see what I mean later.

The template for the spiders web quilt block is on a different page which I hope you will be able to print out.  Click on spiders web quilt block and don't forget to add 1/4" seam allowance when you cut it out.  You need only two templates, the triangle and the diamond shape.

Cut triangles from the strip pieced panel, working from each edge to get the maximum number of triangles from the fabric.   This also means that you will have half the triangles with the blue 2" strip at the base and half the triangles with the pink 1" strip at the base.

So, back to the black corners for the halloween quilt.  Sew a triangle to each side of the black diamond.  I have used a triangle with a 2" blue base on one side and a triangle with a 1" pink base on the other side.  These three pieces now form a half square triangle and two of these can be sewn together along the long edge to make a square.

This is probably a good place for the video:

Two of the triangles shown above sewn together to make a square which doesn't look a bit like a spider web.  But just look what happens when you put four of these squares together as shown on the right.  This is the stage where the difference in seam widths helps because there's less seam matching to do as you sew the triangles together, but do be careful to match the centres of the triangles.

The photo on the left shows the same four quilt blocks re arranged to have the black diamonds in the middle.  This shows up as a secondary pattern when you sew together rows of the spiders web quilt blocks.  I used twelve quilt blocks sewn together in three rows of four and this makes a small quilt about 28" by 21" which would make a great cloak for a small child going out to trick or treat.
