This is one of those quilt blocks where the name is fairly self evident.
I made it first with a strong colour around the egg timer patches, but I felt it looked better when I made it again with the 2 outer colours switched.
To make each block I needed:
Cream fabric: one 4.1/4" square for the middle and one 4.1/2" square cut down the diagonal for the 2 triangles.
Turquoise: four 4.1/4" squares
Brown: two 4.1/4" squares for the corners and one 4.1/2" square cut down the diagonal for the triangles. This gave a 12" block.
Sew the triangles together first, then sew the blocks together across each row, working from left to right. Sew all the rows together.
I made 4 blocks and achieved 2 totally different secondary patterns depending on which way I put the blocks together.
In the end I went for the layout as this photo. I find that my eye is drawn to the warmer colours of the corners of the blocks and I have to look hard to see the hourglass.
