Hexagonal patchwork place mats pattern
These quilted patchwork table mats are designed using the same fabrics and techniques as the quilted patchwork table runner.
For each patchwork place mat you will need:
Yellow: 3 squares 4.1/2" by 4.1/2"
Brown: 2 squares 4.1/2" by 4.1/2"
Green: 2 squares 4.1/2" by 4.1/2"
Orange: 1 square 4.3/4" by 4.3/4" cut down the diagonal to create 2 triangles.
You will also need a strip about 47" long and 2.1/2" wide for the binding, a rectangle each of wadding and backing about 18" by 12".
Lay the patchwork pieces out as shown:
1st row: orange triangle, green square, yellow square
2nd row: brown square, yellow square, brown square
3rd row: yellow square, green square, orange triangle.
Check carefully which way the triangles go: it's easy to get it wrong. Sew the patchwork pieces together across each row, using a 1/4" seam.
Flip the top row down over the 2nd row and sew the two strips together with a 1/4" seam. It is worth pinning at each seam across the row so that the squares will line up with the ones above.
Sew the 3rd row to the top 2 rows in the same way. Rotate the shape and you can see how the patchwork place mat will look.
Lay the backing fabric with right side down, add the wadding on top and then the patchwork place mat with right side up. Baste round the edge. If you baste less than 1/4" from the edge then you won't need to unpick the basting - it will be covered by the binding. Anything to save time!
I didn't want the quilting to stand out particularly on either the front or the back of the patchwork place mat, so I just quilted along the seams around the yellow squares (stitch in the ditch) using a white thread on top and a black thread in the bobbin.
