Number Baby Crib Quilt

Baby quilt using pieced number quilt blocks

Baby quilts are very often made using gentle, pastel colours.  These are great, but every now and again it's fun to do something a little bolder.

number baby quiltI noticed this gorgeous number fabric in my local quilt shop and knew immediately that I wanted to add patchwork numbers in bold colours to it.

Yes, I know babies can't read numbers but this baby crib quilt can be a playmat long after baby is out of the crib.

The finished size is 30.1/2" by 30.1/2".

For this baby crib quilt you will need 1/2 yard of the patchwork fabric for the numbers, and 1.1/2 yards of the background fabric.

The numbers and quite a few of the background pieces are made from 1.1/2" strips so I found it helpful to cut 4 strips across the width at 1.1/2" wide at the beginning.  It's also a good idea to cut the baby quilt backing from the background fabric at the beginning because it doesn't cover the full width of the fabric so you then have the remainder of that width to use for shapes for the quilt blocks.

TO MAKE BABY QUILT BLOCK NUMBER 1

number baby quiltnumber baby quiltNumber 1 is a good one to start with:  nice and easy!
In the background fabric you will need:
2 strips  8.1/2" by 1.1/2"
2 rectangles 6.1/2" by 4.1/2".
In the patchwork fabric you will need 1 strip 6.1/2" by 1.1/2".

With right sides together and using a 1/4" seam, sew one of the 4.1/2" rectangles to one long edge of the green strip.  Then do the same with the other rectangle to the other side of the green strip.  Attach the 8.1/2" strips of background fabric to the top and bottom of the patchwork quilt block.

TO MAKE BABY QUILT BLOCK NUMBER 2

In the background fabric you will need:
2 strips 8.1/2" by 1.1/2"
2 strips 6.1/2" by 1.1/2"
1 strip 5.1/2" by 1.1/2"
1 strip 5.1/2" by 2.1/2"
In the patchwork fabric you will need:
3 strips 5.1/2" by 1.1/2"
                                1 strip 2.1/2" by 1.1/2"
                                1 strip 4.1/2" by 1.1/2"

Lay the pieces out as shown.  Sew one of the 5.1/2" green strips to the 5.1/2" by 2.1/2" background strip and then sew these two to another 5.1/2" green strip.  Attach the 4.1/2" green strip on the right hand side to create the top half of the number 2.

Sew the 5.1/2" by 1.1/2" background strip to the last 5.1/2" green strip and sew the 2.1/2" green strip down the left hand side to create the bottom half of the number 2.  Sew these two blocks together to complete the number 2.
Add the 6.1/2" background strips on either side and then the 8.1/2" background strips on top and bottom.

Sew the 3.1/2" by 2.1/2" background strips to either side of the 3.1/2" by 1.1/2" green fabric.  Sew the 2.1/2" by 4.1/2" background strip to the left hand side of this block. This creates the middle of the number.

Sew the 5.1/2" by 1.1/2" strips of green fabric to top and bottom of this block and then add the 6.1/2" green strip to the right hand side.

As with the number 2, add the 6.1/2" background strips to either side of the block and then the 8.1/2" strips to the top and bottom of the patchwork block.

Sew the 4.1/2" strip of background, 1.1/2" green square and 1.1/2" background square into a column.  Add the 6.1/2" background strip to the right of this and the 6.1/2" green strip to the left. Sew the 6.1/2" strip of green to the 6.1/2" strip of background fabric along the long edge.

Take the 7" green strip and fold down 2 corners as shown.  Cut along the fold to cut those corners off.  This strip will form the slant on the number 4.

You now have 3 parts to make up the block.  Sew the 2 left hand pieces together and then sew them to the right hand piece.

Add the remaining 6.1/2" background strip on the left of the block and add the 8.1/2" background strips to the top and bottom.

Sew one green 2" strip to the left of a background strip 2" by 5.1/2" and the other one to the right of the other 2" background strip.
Sew a green 6.1/2" strip above and below the strip with the green on the left (for the top of the 5) and sew the remaining green 6.1/2" strip below the strip with green on the left (for the bottom of the 5).
Sew these 2 blocks together to complete the 5.  Add a 6.1/2" background strip on either side and add an 8.1/2" strip on the top and bottom.

I used far too many photos in the course of these instructions and the page was taking forever to download.  I was worried that everyone would get bored waiting for the page to open, so I have put the rest of the instructions on a second page.  To continue reading,
