Make a mountain quilt block
This is a fairly easy quilt block that I used to depict mountains in my Scottish themed quilt. It is made from 1 large and 2 small triangles and I have included an idea for the leftover triangles which can be used in the border.
Cut a 7" square in the main fabric, fold in half and cut along the diagonal to make 1 large and 2 small triangles. Save the small triangles for later.
In the background fabric, cut a rectangle 7" by 3.1/2" and cut along the diagonal to make 2 triangles.
Sew 1 background triangle to 1 side of the main triangle. This first seam can be chain sewn for the number of blocks you require.
I find it best not to chainsew the 2nd triangle because I like to begin stitching at the top of the block, putting the needle in exactly where the first line of stitching runs. Take care to fold the first triangle out of the way before you begin.
That is what I call the mountain quilt block complete.
In order to use up the leftover brown triangles, I cut 7" by 3.1/2" rectangles in a different fabric and cut down the diagonal.
These can then be sewn to the brown triangles to make rectangles which are quite useful for a border. Do take care to get the triangles the right way round before you join them together: I sewed the wrong sides together several times when my concentration lapsed.
Sew the resulting rectangles together across the short end to make strips or you could even sew them together on the long edge for a different effect.
Try various combinations until you have the effect that you are looking for.
I used both the mountain quilt block and the border block in the Scottish themed quilt.
